Aurora Judge Closes Dangerous Apartment Complex Over Migrant Gang Violence

A Colorado judge has ordered the immediate closure of The Edge at Lowry apartment complex in Aurora, citing extreme safety concerns after the property became a hotspot for violent gang activity. The ruling follows a petition from city officials highlighting how the complex has been overrun by the dangerous Venezuelan gang Tren de Aragua.

Judge Shawn Day ruled that the complex poses a direct threat to public safety due to ongoing violent crimes. Although the emergency order was granted, Aurora officials say it could take until mid-February to fully close the property and relocate residents.

Aurora Police Chief Todd Chamberlain emphasized that the property had become a breeding ground for violent crime. In 2024 alone, police responded to 382 calls for service at the complex. Chamberlain admitted that despite proactive efforts by law enforcement, criminal activity persisted due to the gang’s dominance over the area.

The urgency of the closure intensified after a brutal December home invasion carried out by nine suspected members of the Tren de Aragua gang. The suspects allegedly invaded a couple’s apartment, where they beat, stabbed and kidnapped the victims. The attackers also stole jewelry from the victims before leaving them hospitalized.

Authorities initially arrested 19 suspects in connection with the violent attack. Three were later released after questioning, but 16 remain in U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) custody. Seven additional suspects are still under investigation and may face further charges.

Aurora city officials are working alongside nonprofit organizations and a third-party property management company to help lawful tenants find alternative housing. Jessica Prosser, Director of Housing and Community Services, stated that the focus will be on ensuring families receive the assistance they need. Police will continue monitoring the complex to maintain safety during the relocation process.
