Biden Allocates $1 Billion In Aid To Africa Amid Domestic Recovery Concerns

During a visit to Angola, President Joe Biden pledged an additional $1 billion in humanitarian aid for African nations, even as many Americans impacted by Hurricane Helene await much-needed federal assistance. Speaking at Angola’s National Museum of Slavery, Biden emphasized a renewed commitment to U.S.-Africa relations.

“History can be hidden, but it cannot and should not be erased. It should be faced,” Biden said, addressing the legacy of slavery and its ties between Angola and the United States. The president noted that many enslaved Africans brought to America were from Angola.

The aid package targets drought relief, food insecurity, and displaced populations across 31 African countries. The funding includes $823 million from USAID and $186 million from the State Department. Biden highlighted his administration’s broader efforts in Africa, including $40 billion in government investments and $52 billion in business partnerships for infrastructure and renewable energy projects.

The announcement drew criticism from Americans struggling with delayed recovery efforts after Hurricane Helene. Many questioned the administration’s priorities as billions are allocated abroad while U.S. taxpayers remain in need.

Biden’s speech was delivered under tight security, reflecting Angola’s challenges with gang violence and human trafficking. The country is described by the Global Organized Crime Index as a hub for forced labor and exploitation in industries like agriculture and diamond mining.

The president avoided addressing questions from reporters about his decision to pardon his son, Hunter Biden, a move that has sparked controversy given Biden’s previous assertions that “no one is above the law.”

Concluding his remarks, Biden emphasized the potential of U.S.-Africa collaboration. “We don’t know what the future holds, but we know the future runs through Africa,” he said, underscoring the administration’s focus on strengthening international partnerships.
