Biden Reelection Bid Triggers Rating Drop

During a recent appearance on Fox News, Mark Penn, President and Managing Partner of the Stagwell Group and former strategist for President Bill Clinton, posited that President Joe Biden’s approval rating plummeted to 36 percent in the most recent Washington Post and ABC News poll due to his decision to run for reelection.

On Monday, Penn joined Fox News’ America’s Newsroom anchors Bill Hemmer and Dana Perino to discuss the latest Washington Post and ABC News poll, which indicated that President Joe Biden’s had dropped to a 36 percent approval rating among adults, with 56 percent disapproving.

The poll also revealed this loss of support was particularly evident among Democrats. This latest poll represents a significant plummet from February’s poll, which showed the president’s satisfaction rating at 42 percent.

Penn attributed the six-point drop in approval to Biden’s campaign announcement last month. He suggested that the declaration of Biden’s reelection bid is the main reason behind the drop in his approval ratings. He pointed out that less than 40% of Democrats supported his choice to run and said his statement was rushed and fell flat.

Penn warned that with such low numbers, the situation could be catastrophic for the Democrats. According to CNN, Biden’s 36 percent is lower than any other president at this point in his first term in the past 80 years.

The survey found that 63 percent of Americans do not believe Biden “has the mental sharpness it takes to serve effectively as president.” Moreover, 62 percent of Americans do not think the 80-year-old “is in good enough physical health to serve effectively as president.”

Additionally, it highlights former President Donald Trump leading Biden 49 percent to 42 percent in a general election match-up. The poll sampled 1,006 American adults between April 28 and May 3, with a margin of error of plus or minus 3.5 percentage points for the full sample.

At the end of the day the President’s support is eroding among Democrats, with many questioning his fitness for office. Penn’s comments on Fox News suggest that Joe Biden’s announcement to run for a second term likely contributed to the decline in his approval ratings.
