In the aftermath of an assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump, critics are lambasting President Joe Biden’s administration for prioritizing diversity over competence. Rusty Weiss, in a recent op-ed for RedState, argues that Biden’s focus on appointing individuals based on identity rather than qualifications has led to significant failures, particularly in national security.
The incident at a Trump rally in Pennsylvania saw a shooter come dangerously close to killing the former president. The security breach has placed Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle in the spotlight, with Weiss highlighting her appointment as an example of the administration’s problematic hiring practices. Despite warnings and visible signs of threat, the shooter was able to carry out his attack, raising serious questions about the agency’s effectiveness.
Weiss contends that Cheatle, who was appointed and celebrated for being a woman, represents a broader trend within the Biden administration. He quotes Rep. Tim Burchett (R-KY), who described Cheatle as a “diversity hire.” This term is used to criticize the administration’s tendency to prioritize gender, race, and other identity factors over merit and experience.
The Daily Mail has also criticized Cheatle, accusing her of focusing more on gender diversity goals within the Secret Service than on ensuring the protection of those under her care. The publication suggests that Dr. Jill Biden had a significant influence on Cheatle’s appointment, further emphasizing the administration’s commitment to diversity.
Weiss expands his critique to include other prominent figures in the Biden administration, such as DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas and Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg.
Mayorkas, noted as the first Latino and immigrant in his role, is accused of ignoring security requests and overseeing a historically insecure southern border. Buttigieg, recognized as the first openly gay cabinet member, is criticized for his handling of transportation issues, including frequent train derailments and supply chain disruptions.
White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre and Vice President Kamala Harris also come under fire. Jean-Pierre, who is female, Black, and a lesbian, is described as ineffective in her communication role. Harris, chosen for her racial and gender identity, is portrayed as ineffective, particularly in her responsibilities related to immigration.
Weiss concludes that the Biden administration’s approach to hiring has led to a “failed experiment” characterized by incompetence and inefficacy. He argues that the emphasis on diversity has compromised the administration’s ability to govern effectively and maintain national security. Weiss calls for a shift away from identity-based appointments and towards a merit-based approach to ensure that the most qualified individuals are in positions of power.
As the nation grapples with the implications of the recent security breach, the debate over the administration’s hiring practices is likely to intensify, with calls for a reevaluation of priorities to restore competence and reliability in governance.
