Boebert’s Bill Targets ATF For Federal Abuses

Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-CO) is leading a legislative effort to abolish the ATF, arguing the agency has consistently misused its authority and undermined public trust. HR 129, introduced earlier this month, aims to dissolve the agency altogether.

Boebert has criticized the ATF for its controversial rulemaking practices, stating, “This rule functions like a law that Congress never passed.” She pointed to the regulation of stabilizing braces, a rule recently deemed likely illegal by the courts, as an example of the agency exceeding its powers.

One of the ATF’s most infamous failures was Operation Fast and Furious, which attempted to track firearms sold illegally to cartels but ended with hundreds of lost weapons. The operation exposed what Boebert called “recklessness” within the agency.

Boebert’s bill aligns with a broader Republican effort to curtail what they see as unchecked federal power. Missouri Rep. Eric Burlison has also called for the ATF’s elimination, describing it as a long-standing violator of constitutional rights.

Critics of the ATF argue its actions make communities less safe rather than more secure. Boebert said the agency’s actions have “made our communities more dangerous by laundering weapons to the cartels.”

With Republicans controlling Congress and President-elect Donald Trump preparing to take office, Boebert’s legislation could gain momentum as part of a wider push to reduce government overreach.
