Border Numbers From 2014 Are Much Different Than The Crisis Today

On the “Rob Schmitt Tonight” broadcast Monday, Sen. Ron Johnson (R-WI.) pointed out that in 2014 there were about 2,000 encounters between law enforcement and migrants per day at the southern border compared to close to 7,000 per day in 2022. Then-President Obama called the 2014 border a “crisis” while Vice President Harris refers to the 2022 border as “secure.”

The numbers at the border are staggering. During President Trump’s four years in office, the average number of encounters between law enforcement and migrants illegally entering America was about 750,000. Since Biden has taken office, those numbers have almost tripled to more than 2 million per year.

In spite of the overwhelming evidence that the border is not only not secure, but in the midst of a crisis, Vice President Harris continues to use the word “secure” in her description of what is happening there.

In 2014, according to an NPR article, President Obama warned Americans in a nationally televised address of an “actual humanitarian crisis on the border.” At the time, Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) officers were encountering about 2,000 migrants every day.

Johnson said on “Rob Schmitt Tonight,” “Well, the vice president, the president, and Secretary Mayorkas are as detached from reality as they are from the truth. The fact of the matter is that this is a crisis. Again, 7,000 people — President Obama declared it a crisis — a humanitarian crisis when it was 2,000 people a day. But what they consider a success is processing and dispersing within eight hours. They just got very efficient at processing and dispersing to all points of America, and it’s all okay. Unless they come to Democrat-controlled cities, then it’s a problem again. So, again, the hypocrisy is just jaw-dropping.”

In this case, the American people agree. In fact, according to another NPR poll, 53% of Americans would use the word “invasion” to describe what is happening at the U.S.-Mexico border. There were 81 suspected terrorists who have been encountered on the border, compared to approximately six per year during Trump’s four years in office.

No matter how the current administration spins it, Johnson is right. There is a crisis at the border, and President Biden’s policies are doing nothing but making matters worse.
