Former FBI Director James Comey is under investigation after a whistleblower accused him of orchestrating an unauthorized surveillance operation against Donald Trump’s 2016 campaign. FBI Director Kash Patel has initiated a review to determine whether Comey’s reported actions violated bureau policies or federal law.
According to testimony provided to the House Judiciary Committee, Comey allegedly instructed two female FBI agents to infiltrate the Trump campaign and establish relationships with key members. The agents, known as “honeypots,” were reportedly embedded in the campaign in 2015 as part of an operation that was never officially documented within FBI records.

The whistleblower claims that then-Deputy Director Dave Bowdich and senior FBI official Paul Abbate were involved in managing the operation. The effort reportedly ended when a media outlet uncovered details about one of the operatives and prepared to reveal her identity.
Patel, who assumed the role of FBI director last week, previously pledged to depoliticize the agency. While he initially stated he would not use the bureau to go after political figures, the emergence of this testimony has prompted him to order an internal review.
The FBI has not released details on the scope of Patel’s investigation, and Comey has not responded to the allegations. The review remains separate from past probes into FBI actions related to Trump, including the Crossfire Hurricane investigation.
Patel’s decision to move forward with the case suggests a renewed focus on addressing concerns about political bias and internal misconduct within the agency.
