For the third consecutive year, the Department of Education has failed its audit, raising alarms about its ability to manage taxpayer funds and fulfill its mission to improve education across the United States. Workforce Committee Chairwoman Virginia Foxx has expressed frustration with the department’s failure to prioritize meaningful changes, instead focusing resources on student loan programs and satisfying the demands of teachers’ unions.
In a recent statement, Foxx criticized the Biden administration’s focus on non-essential programs while the country’s education system continues to struggle. “Instead of focusing energy and time on improving operations and student outcomes at every level, the education department has poured its resources into the student loan schemes,” she said. This misdirection of funds is seen as one of the key reasons why the education system is failing to produce positive results.
Jill Savage, host of Blaze News Tonight, also weighed in, expressing her frustration with the department’s continued failure to pass audits. “Three audits in a row that the Department of Education has failed. Are we even surprised at this point in time?” she remarked. The repeated failures highlight an ongoing issue with accountability and oversight within the agency, something that has many critics questioning its role in the future of American education.
Oklahoma State Education Superintendent Ryan Walters, however, was not shocked by the audit results. He pointed out that the U.S. operated without a federal Department of Education for over 200 years and still managed to become the greatest nation in history. “We’ve had one for 40 years, and every educational statistic has gotten worse,” Walters said. He believes that the department’s involvement in education has hindered progress, and that the country would be better off without it.
Walters went on to highlight the deterioration of schools, which he says have shifted focus away from teaching basic skills and patriotism to promoting divisive ideologies. He believes that the federal government’s intervention in education has been a major factor in the decline of educational standards across the nation. “We’ve watched schools go from teaching patriotism to teaching kids to hate their countries,” Walters stated.
President Trump has signaled that he will focus on dismantling ineffective agencies, and the Department of Education should be at the top of his list. If the department is unable to manage itself effectively, as demonstrated by the repeated audit failures, it is time to reconsider its role in America’s educational landscape.
