DeSantis Torches Opponent In Florida Governor Debate

On Monday, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) faced off against Democratic candidate Charlie Crist in a fiery debate, culminating in DeSantis’ savvy handling of Crist’s claims that DeSantis plans to run for president in 2024.

Crist attempted to undermine DeSantis by suggesting to the audience that DeSantis would abandon his commitment to the people of Florida to run for president in 2024.

“You talk about Joe Biden a lot, I understand: You think you’re going to be running against him,” Crist began during the debate. “I can see how you might get confused, but you’re running for governor. And I have a question for you.”

“Why don’t you look into the eyes of the people of the state of Florida and say to them, if you’re reelected, you will serve a full four-year term as governor, yes or no?” challenged Crist, leering at DeSantis.

DeSantis paused to allow the moderator to explain that the two sides had not agreed that the candidates would answer questions from one another. The moderator then gave DeSantis an opportunity to respond.

DeSantis waited patiently, building the suspense, clearly prepared to deliver a blistering response.

“Well, listen, I know that Charlie is interested in talking about 2024 and Joe Biden, but I just want to make things very, very clear,” DeSantis retorted. “The only worn-out old donkey I’m looking to put out to pasture is Charlie Crist.”

With DeSantis’ impeccable timing and delivery, even Crist could not help but crack a smile.

DeSantis delivered a number of staggering blows to Crist throughout the debate, attacking him for everything from his stance on abortion and gender identity, to his lack of help during Hurricane Ian and support for mandatory COVID-19 vaccinations.

DeSantis advocated for his pro-life stance with the simple statement, “We’re better when everybody counts.” He then contrasted his policy with that of his opponent.

“Charlie Crist opposes [Florida’s 15-week abortion ban], even though the baby is fully formed, has a heartbeat, can feel pain, and can suck their thumb.”

DeSantis is the clear favorite to win another term as Florida governor, and Monday night’s debate demonstrated exactly why that is.
