
Acting Attorney General James McHenry has fired more than a dozen Justice Department employees involved in Special Counsel Jack Smith’s investigations into President Donald Trump. The officials were informed of their termination via formal letters, according to sources within the department.
A DOJ spokesperson confirmed the decision, explaining that McHenry had lost confidence in these individuals due to their prominent roles in prosecuting Trump. “These officials were directly involved in actions that contradict the administration’s mission to end the weaponization of federal agencies,” the spokesperson said.

Smith was appointed as special counsel in 2022 to lead investigations into Trump’s handling of classified materials and his actions after the 2020 election. Both cases were dismissed after Trump’s election win in 2024, and Smith stepped down after finalizing his report on the investigations.

In a related move, the acting U.S. attorney in Washington, D.C., ordered a review of charging decisions in Jan. 6 cases. The review will focus on the use of obstruction charges, which the Supreme Court ruled had been applied too broadly in many instances. Prosecutors have been asked to turn over communications and case files for evaluation.

The Trump administration has also reassigned several high-ranking DOJ officials from critical divisions, aligning with the president’s goal to eliminate bias within federal agencies. These reassignments follow an executive order signed last week targeting politically motivated actions in the government.

The chief of the DOJ’s Public Integrity Section resigned after being reassigned. This official had previously worked on aspects of Smith’s investigations, according to court records. The Justice Department has not commented further on these developments.
