European Leaders Suggest Shifting Energy Imports To US After Trump Win

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated Friday that the European Union might prioritize American energy over Russian imports following President Donald Trump’s 2024 election victory. The move would align with efforts to enhance Europe’s energy independence and deepen transatlantic trade ties.

“We still get a lot of energy from Russia, and why not replace it [with] American energy, which is cheaper for us and brings down our energy prices,” von der Leyen said during a press event in Budapest.

The EU has made some progress in reducing its reliance on Russian energy since the Russia-Ukraine war began but has yet to sever ties entirely. Trump’s return to the White House could accelerate this transition by fostering greater U.S.-EU cooperation.

Von der Leyen emphasized the need to work with Trump’s administration on shared goals. “Common interests are, for example… the whole topic of energy,” she told reporters, highlighting the potential for productive trade talks.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz expressed optimism about Trump’s presidency, stating, “From this point of view, I think the foundations are there for developing a common policy.”
Trump’s leadership is expected to bring significant changes to the U.S.-EU relationship, encouraging collaboration on energy and trade while reducing Europe’s dependence on Moscow.
