FBI Director Wray Announces Second Major Disruption Of Chinese Hacking Group

FBI Director Christopher Wray announced on Wednesday that the FBI has disrupted the efforts of a second Chinese hacking group, known as “Flax Typhoon.” Speaking at the Aspen Cyber Summit in Washington, D.C., Wray revealed that this group had compromised thousands of devices across the U.S., many of which were used to launch cyberattacks against American targets.

Flax Typhoon, according to Wray, had built a botnet using hijacked devices such as cameras and digital storage systems. Half of these compromised devices were located within the U.S. Wray emphasized that the group’s activities were orchestrated by Integrity Technology Group, a Chinese company that gathers intelligence for Chinese government security agencies while posing as an IT firm.

The FBI’s cyber team moved quickly to take control of the botnet. However, the hackers attempted to retaliate with a Distributed Denial of Service (DDOS) attack before abandoning their efforts. Wray explained that while this battle was a success, it is part of a longer struggle with Chinese cyber threats.

Flax Typhoon operates in a manner similar to another Chinese hacking group, “Volt Typhoon,” which was exposed last year. Volt Typhoon infiltrated critical American infrastructure, including energy and telecommunications systems. Wray suggested that these activities are part of a broader cyber conflict linked to ongoing U.S.-China tensions, particularly surrounding Taiwan.

Wray reaffirmed the FBI’s commitment to addressing Chinese cyber threats, noting that the agency remains focused on dismantling hacking groups that target U.S. security and infrastructure.
