Financial Motives At Center Of Immigration Debate, Says Vigano

Archbishop Carlo Maria Vigano has accused Catholic leaders of prioritizing financial gains over doctrinal consistency in their immigration stance. His comments target Cardinal Robert McElroy’s claims that mass deportations conflict with Catholic teachings.

Vigano argued that enforcing deportation policies aligns with natural law and governmental duties. He claimed that Catholic organizations benefiting from taxpayer-funded immigration programs oppose enforcement to maintain their funding streams.

Reports show Catholic Charities USA received $1.4 billion in government funding in 2023, significantly more than from private contributions. Critics, including Sheena Rodriguez of the Alliance for a Safe Texas, highlight how the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops lobbied for nearly $30 billion in immigration-related funding for 2024.

Vigano tied the Church’s advocacy for migration to a larger globalist agenda, alleging that mass immigration destabilizes societies and replaces populations. He accused Church leaders of advancing political goals at the expense of their spiritual mission.

McElroy, a close ally of Pope Francis, recently assumed leadership of the Washington Archdiocese. Known for his progressive stances, including LGBTQ inclusion and environmental advocacy, McElroy has faced criticism over his alignment with traditional Catholic values.

This debate reveals a growing divide within the Church over its role in addressing immigration and broader societal issues.
