GOP Pushes Back As North Carolina Supreme Court Blocks Certification

In a contentious battle over North Carolina’s Supreme Court race, Republican challenger Jefferson Griffin secured a temporary stay from the state’s high court, preventing certification of Democrat Allison Riggs as the winner. The 5-1 decision comes after Griffin raised concerns about tens of thousands of ballots.

The race was close, with Riggs leading Griffin by just 734 votes after a recount. Griffin had been ahead on election night, but the margin flipped as additional ballots were tallied. Republicans claim that 60,000 of those votes are questionable and should not be included in the results.

Griffin, joined by the North Carolina GOP and the Republican National Committee, filed numerous challenges to these ballots. “This is about ensuring confidence in our elections,” Griffin stated, emphasizing the need to count only valid votes. RNC Chairman Michael Whatley criticized the election board’s conduct, describing it as inconsistent and lacking transparency.

The legal fight has shifted between state and federal courts. A federal judge sent the case back to North Carolina, but the state elections board appealed to the 4th Circuit Court of Appeals, which has not yet ruled.

The temporary halt on certification was issued by the North Carolina Supreme Court’s Republican majority. Riggs recused herself from the decision, while Justice Anita Earls dissented, arguing that the court should not interfere with election outcomes determined by state processes.

This dispute underscores broader concerns about election integrity. Despite President Donald Trump winning North Carolina by a comfortable margin in 2024, several statewide races saw Democrats narrowly prevail, raising questions among Republican voters.
