GOP Senators Demand Answers from Secret Service Director Over Trump Assassination Attempt

A dramatic confrontation unfolded at the 2024 Republican National Convention in Milwaukee when Republican Senators Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) and John Barrasso (R-WY) confronted U.S. Secret Service Director Kim Cheatle. The senators demanded answers regarding the attempted assassination of 2024 Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump during a rally in Pennsylvania on July 13.

House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer had subpoenaed Cheatle to appear at a hearing on July 22 to explain the security failures that allowed the attack. Fox News’ Aishah Hasnie reported that Cheatle was in a “luxury suite” at the convention before Blackburn and Barrasso approached her.

According to ABC News, Secret Service snipers identified the would-be assassin, Thomas Matthew Crooks, on a rooftop 20 minutes before Trump took the stage. Despite this, Cheatle provided no clear explanation when Barrasso questioned why Trump was put in harm’s way.

Sen. Blackburn criticized Cheatle for not acting despite knowing about the threat an hour before the rally. “I don’t think that this is the forum to have this discussion,” Cheatle responded, which only fueled the senators’ anger. Barrasso insisted on finding a place to discuss the matter immediately, while Blackburn accused Cheatle of stonewalling and emphasized the gravity of the situation by shouting, “This was an assassination attempt! You owe the people answers! You owe President Trump answers!”

Cheatle, who has refused to resign, acknowledged in a CNN interview that the Secret Service was solely responsible for security at the rally. “The buck stops with me. I am the director of the Secret Service, and I need to make sure that we are performing a review and that we are giving resources to our personnel as necessary,” Cheatle said. “It was unacceptable and it’s something that shouldn’t happen again.”

The attack on Trump resulted in a bullet grazing his ear. Tragically, one rally attendee was killed, and two others were injured, including one man who was put in a medically induced coma due to the severity of his wounds. The incident has raised serious questions about the Secret Service’s handling of the event and the overall security measures in place for high-profile political figures.
