Greenland’s Prime Minister Advocates For Independence From Danish Rule

Prime Minister Múte Egede has sparked significant attention with his recent declaration that Greenland must move toward independence from Denmark. In a speech, Egede called for Greenland to chart its own future, free from what he described as colonial-era constraints that continue to hold the territory back.

Egede emphasized that Denmark’s oversight has prevented Greenland from fully realizing its potential. He criticized the existing framework for trade and international relations, which requires Greenland to operate through Danish channels. “For our cooperation with other countries, and our trade relations, cannot continue to take place solely through Denmark,” Egede said, stressing the need for direct global engagement.

Citing the Self-Government Act, Egede highlighted that Greenland already has the legal basis for independence. He pointed to ongoing efforts to draft a constitution as a critical step toward establishing Greenland as a sovereign state. These efforts, he said, reflect the readiness of the Greenlandic people to take control of their political and economic future.

The call for independence comes as interest in Greenland’s strategic location and resources grows internationally. President Donald Trump has previously underscored Greenland’s importance to U.S. national security. In a statement, Trump referred to Greenland as an “absolute necessity” for American interests, highlighting its potential role in safeguarding global stability.

Egede, however, has made it clear that Greenland’s sovereignty is non-negotiable. In response to Trump’s remarks, he firmly stated, “Greenland is ours. We are not for sale and will never be for sale.” Egede framed his independence push as a continuation of Greenland’s long-standing pursuit of freedom from external control.

With constitutional preparations underway and Egede’s strong rhetoric, Greenland appears positioned to take meaningful steps toward independence, signaling a new chapter in its relationship with Denmark.
