Hegseth Moves To Strip Milley Of Security Clearance, Ends His Security Detail

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has taken decisive action against retired Gen. Mark Milley, revoking his security clearance and removing his personal security detail. Milley, who has faced serious accusations of undermining the chain of command, will now be shut out from classified military information.

The Pentagon confirmed the move Tuesday, explaining that Milley had been granted a security detail due to past threats from Iran. That protection has now been lifted as part of broader efforts under President Donald Trump to reestablish accountability within the Department of Defense.

In addition to cutting off Milley’s access to sensitive information, Hegseth has ordered an Inspector General investigation to determine whether Milley should lose a star in retirement. The review will examine Milley’s role in past military decisions and whether his conduct warrants a reduction in rank.

Milley’s legacy inside the Pentagon is also being erased. His first official portrait was removed on Inauguration Day, and now a second one—previously displayed in the Army’s Marshall Corridor—will also be taken down. Once that happens, no images of Milley will remain inside the Pentagon.

Concerns had grown over Milley’s continued security clearance, especially given his controversial record. With this revocation, the Trump administration has ensured that no further leaks or questionable actions will stem from the retired general.

While Milley received a pardon from President Joe Biden before leaving office, it remains to be seen whether any additional measures will be taken against him. The Pentagon’s actions, however, have made clear that his influence within the military establishment is over.
