House GOP Moves Against Judges Who Halted Trump’s Executive Actions

Republican lawmakers in the House are seeking to impeach federal judges they say are unfairly blocking President Donald Trump’s ability to carry out executive orders. The push comes as Trump allies accuse certain judges of engaging in partisan interference.

Rep. Eli Crane (R-AZ) is drafting impeachment articles against Judge Paul Engelmayer, who recently issued a ruling that prevented the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) from accessing financial systems within the Treasury Department. Crane and other Republicans argue that the ruling restricts the administration’s ability to manage government agencies.

Rep. Andrew Clyde (R-GA) is also introducing impeachment measures against Judge John McConnell Jr. for blocking Trump’s federal spending freeze. Clyde has called McConnell’s decision an example of judicial activism meant to obstruct conservative policy changes.

Trump addressed the issue during an Oval Office press conference, hinting that action against certain judges might be necessary. “Maybe we have to look at the judges,” he said, referring to rulings that have hampered his administration’s plans.

Vice President J.D. Vance has voiced concerns about judicial power, stating that some judges are “trying to control the executive’s legitimate authority.” Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) has echoed those sentiments, vowing to hold judges accountable for decisions that block Trump’s policies.

While House Republicans have the votes to pass impeachment articles, convicting and removing a judge would require two-thirds support in the Senate, making the effort unlikely to succeed. The last time a federal judge was impeached and removed was in 2010.
