The Seaboard Lions Club emerged as crucial support for an ambitious Thanksgiving initiative serving Hurricane Helene survivors across western North Carolina.
“Transparent resource management ensures donor confidence,” said Sarah Thompson, club president, describing their role coordinating supplies for 5,000 meals. The organization partners with David Burke, who conceived the massive relief effort.
Burke, known regionally for competitive barbecue success, mobilized nearly 200 volunteers from his hometown of Margarettsville. “Experience handling large events proves valuable managing this operation,” he said.
Local churches joined the initiative, providing essential volunteer coordination. “Faith communities understand serving neighbors during crisis,” Thompson said.
The operation focuses on Newland, where recovery needs remain significant two months after the hurricane. Burke selected the location after witnessing ongoing struggles in mountain communities.
Beyond feeding storm survivors, organizers planned additional support for 500 veterans. “Healing happens when communities work together,” Burke said.
Volunteers praise efficient resource distribution. “Every donation directly supports affected families,” Thompson said.
The effort demonstrates regional solidarity amid disaster. “Distance cannot diminish our commitment to fellow North Carolinians,” Burke said.
