New Poll Shows Majority Believe Border Crisis Constitutes Migrant ‘Invasion’

When former President Donald Trump launched his 2016 presidential campaign, he was promptly vilified by leftist critics for his frank assessment of the growing crisis along America’s southern border.

Now, amid illegal border crossings that have hit historic levels under President Joe Biden, a new poll shows that a clear majority of Americans believe the situation could be described as an invasion.

The results came from a survey conducted late last month for NPR by Ipsos pollsters. Of the 1,116 respondents, 28% said it is “completely true” that the border situation is an “invasion” and another 25% called the statement “somewhat true.”

As for the negative impacts stemming from increased illegal immigration, roughly half of those surveyed said that it has contributed to “the increase in drug overdoses and deaths in the U.S.”

The Biden administration has received harsh criticism from his political adversaries for embracing far more lenient border policies than his predecessor. With roughly two months left until the end of the current fiscal year, there have already been many more migrant arrests along the U.S.-Mexico border than last year, which was already a record-setting year.

Reports indicate there have been 1.82 million arrests so far in the 2022 fiscal year compared to 1.66 million last year.

A number of GOP-led border states have devised their own plans to address the influx of undocumented migrants, including an effort to send busloads of migrants to the nation’s capital and New York.

Republican Govs. Greg Abbott and Doug Ducey of Texas and Arizona, respectively, have already begun relocating migrants from their states to Democratic-led locations on the East Coast.

“Texas has bused thousands of migrants to Washington, D.C. who would have otherwise been released into small border communities with more limited resources than the nation’s capital,” Abbott wrote in a statement explaining the mission.

The governor has criticized President Joe Biden, and Vice President Kamala Harris for refusing “to see this crisis for themselves” and remaining “willfully ignorant of the crisis that they have created.”

Abbott added: “In fact, U.S. Department of Homeland Security [Alejandro] Mayorkas recently testified that the border is ‘safe and secure.’ It is neither safe nor secure, as you can both attest to.”
