Paul Pelosi Attacker Identified As Leftist ‘Former Castro Nudist Protester’

The suspect who broke into Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi’s (D-CA) San Francisco home and attacked her husband, Paul Pelosi, has been identified as a leftist “nudist” who has a pride flag in his yard — directly contradicting initial claims from the left that the attack was politically motivated from a right-wing extremist.

Paul Pelosi’s attacker was identified on Friday afternoon as 42-year-old David Depape.

During a press conference, police stated that they responded to the home at approximately 2:30 a.m. — arriving at the scene in time to witness Depape and Paul Pelosi fighting for control of a hammer. Police said that the suspect then “pulled the hammer away from Mr. Pelosi and violently assaulted him with it.”

“Our officers immediately tackled the suspect, disarmed him, took him into custody, requested emergency backup, and rendered medical aid,” police added.

Nancy Pelosi was not home when the attack occurred. The investigation is ongoing, and no motive has been identified thus far.

Both Pelosi and Depape were transported to a local hospital for treatment. The House Speaker’s husband reportedly underwent surgery “to repair a skull fracture and serious injuries to his right arm and hands,” according to a spokesperson for Nancy Pelosi.

“Early this morning, an assailant broke into the Pelosi residence in San Francisco and violently assaulted Mr. Pelosi,” Pelosi spokesman Drew Hammill said. “The assailant is in custody and the motivation for the attack is under investigation. Mr. Pelosi was taken to the hospital, where he is receiving excellent medical care and is expected to make a full recovery.”

Heavy.com, a fact-finding website, highlighted a tweet from a Mission Local journalist Joe Eskenazi which revealed the identity of the attacker.

“My sources also name the suspect in this morning’s hammer attack on Paul Pelosi as David DePape, born 1980, of Berkeley,” the tweet read. “He would appear to be a former Castro nudist protester. Things appear set to be bizarre for a while.”

The report cited a 2013 San Francisco Chronicle article in which Depape appears to have been mentioned, although his name is spelled incorrectly in the article, but is spelled properly in the captions for one of the photos included in the article. Depape is also described in the Chronicle article as a “hemp jewelry maker.”

CNN also claimed in its reporting on the incident that the suspect posted debunked conspiracy theories on his social media. According to the outlet, Depape attempted to tie Pelosi up, and had repeatedly asked “Where’s Nancy?”

The report also noted that, when police arrived on the scene, the assailant reportedly stated that he was “waiting for Nancy.”

The U.S. Capitol Police, FBI and San Francisco Police Department are reportedly conducting a joint investigation into the attack.

In a statement, the Capitol Police noted that staff from its field office “quickly arrived on scene, while a team of investigators from the Department’s Threat Assessment Section was simultaneously dispatched from the East Coast to assist the FBI and the San Francisco Police with a joint investigation.”
