Pinellas County Sheriff: Illegal Migrants Account For Most Hurricane Looting Arrests In Florida

In Florida’s Pinellas County, nearly all looting arrests following hurricanes Helene and Milton involved illegal migrants, according to the Sheriff’s Office. Sheriff Bob Gualtieri reported that 41 out of 45 individuals detained for looting, including charges of armed robbery, burglary, and vandalism, were in the U.S. illegally.

Gualtieri commented on the arrests, stating, “A lot of these people were in the area to take others’ properties,” crediting law enforcement’s vigilance in preventing further criminal acts in the hurricane’s aftermath. Police also questioned 196 people on suspicion of looting, ultimately releasing 163, who were also identified as illegal migrants.

The hurricanes left severe damage across several states, with Hurricane Helene alone responsible for at least 230 deaths and damages totaling billions. In response to the disaster, President Donald J. Trump opened his Trump National Doral Miami resort to house 275 linemen restoring power.

However, the Biden-Harris administration’s FEMA response has been under scrutiny, with tech leader Elon Musk and Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) criticizing FEMA for allegedly obstructing aid distribution, including Musk’s Starlink Internet deployment.

The Sheriff’s Office in Pinellas County underscores the challenges of dealing with illegal migration’s impact on community security, particularly as communities work to rebuild. Officials emphasize the need for stricter immigration policies to protect communities in vulnerable times.
