A large-scale theft in Pennsylvania is under investigation after 100,000 organic eggs, valued at $40,000, were reported stolen from a distribution trailer over the weekend. The theft took place outside Pete & Gerry’s Organics in Greencastle, and police are now searching for suspects.
According to Pennsylvania State Police Chambersburg, officers arrived at the scene Saturday night and confirmed that the eggs had been taken from the back of a trailer at around 8:40 p.m. Officials have not provided details on how the theft occurred or whether there are any leads in the case.
Pete & Gerry’s Organics released a statement acknowledging the incident, stating that they are working with law enforcement to investigate. The company, which partners with more than 200 small, family-run farms, has been known for its commitment to organic and sustainable farming practices.
The theft comes amid high egg prices, driven by supply chain issues and the impact of avian flu outbreaks on egg production. Reports indicate that egg prices in December averaged $4.15 per dozen, an increase of 14% from the previous month. The cost of eggs has been a growing concern for consumers, restaurants, and grocery suppliers nationwide.
Pete & Gerry’s Organics has been in operation for decades, shifting to organic farming in the late 1990s. The company has been recognized for its community-focused business model and animal welfare practices.
The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities are asking anyone with relevant information to contact the Pennsylvania State Police Chambersburg barracks.
