Republicans Target Federal Judges Over Rulings Against Trump Administration

A group of House Republicans is moving to impeach federal judges who have ruled against President Donald Trump’s executive actions, arguing that these decisions amount to judicial interference in the administration’s policies.

Rep. Eli Crane (R-AZ) is introducing articles of impeachment against Judge Paul Engelmayer, who ruled against the Trump administration’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), preventing access to key Treasury data. Crane and his allies argue that the judge’s ruling oversteps judicial authority.

Rep. Andrew Clyde (R-GA) is targeting Judge John McConnell Jr. for impeachment after he ruled against Trump’s federal spending freeze. Clyde has accused McConnell of using his judicial position to obstruct conservative policies.

Trump has openly criticized these rulings, suggesting that Congress may need to take action against judges who issue decisions that limit his administration’s power. Vice President J.D. Vance has also raised concerns about what he sees as an expanding role of the judiciary in executive matters.

Several conservative lawmakers, including Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA), have joined the effort, stating that activist judges should not be able to block Trump’s policies with legally questionable rulings.

Though House Republicans can introduce impeachment measures, removing a judge requires two-thirds support in the Senate, making it an uphill battle. The last time a federal judge was successfully impeached and removed was in 2010.
