Russian ‘Shadow Fleet’ Tanker Seized Over Baltic Cable Attack

The Eagle S, a tanker linked to Russia’s shadow fleet, was seized by Finnish authorities after it was implicated in the damage of the Estlink-2 power cable. The undersea cable serves as a vital energy connection between Finland and Estonia.

AIS tracking indicated the Eagle S made erratic movements over the cable before it was disabled. Investigators discovered that one of the tanker’s anchors was missing, further implicating it in the incident.

This is the latest in a series of sabotage events targeting the Baltic’s infrastructure. Previous incidents involved Chinese vessels damaging gas pipelines and telecom cables, with limited repercussions for those responsible.

Finnish officials acted swiftly, boarding the Eagle S and detaining its crew for questioning. The ship’s suspected ties to Russia’s shadow fleet, a covert operation smuggling oil, have heightened concerns about hybrid warfare tactics in the region.

The repeated targeting of undersea infrastructure poses significant risks to NATO and EU members, emphasizing the need for stronger security measures.

Finnish police are continuing to investigate the Eagle S, focusing on its activities and possible connections to earlier sabotage incidents.
