Sheinbaum Rejects US Crackdown On Cartels As Concerns Grow Over Her Allegiances

Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum is making it clear that she will not allow US intervention in her country’s fight against cartel violence. As the Trump administration designates several major drug cartels as terrorist organizations, Sheinbaum insists that Mexico will handle the crisis on its own.

Trump has taken an aggressive stance against cartel operations, arguing that their influence extends beyond traditional crime and poses a national security risk. Secretary of State Marco Rubio defended the designation, stating that it strengthens law enforcement efforts. Meanwhile, billionaire Elon Musk suggested that the move could justify military action, saying that it “means they’re eligible for drone strikes.”

Sheinbaum, whose rise to power was overshadowed by a wave of cartel-related assassinations, has faced criticism for her handling of organized crime. She declared that Mexico would not accept any “subordination” to US authorities and would strengthen legal barriers to prevent foreign military action on Mexican soil.

Despite her defiant stance, Sheinbaum’s administration has taken limited steps to appease Washington. Mexican authorities have carried out high-profile arrests and increased border security efforts to prevent additional US economic penalties. However, her government continues to resist calls for direct American involvement in the fight against cartels.

Reports confirm that US surveillance flights have been operating inside Mexican airspace for years, with drone operations expanding to track fentanyl production. Sheinbaum acknowledged the operations but stated that she had not been fully informed about their increased scope.

The Trump administration’s move to classify cartels as terrorist groups has sparked international debate, with Canada also adopting the designation. Mexico, however, remains firm in rejecting foreign intervention, despite escalating violence within its borders.
