Stacey Abrams Faces Backlash After Tying Abortion To Inflation

Democrat Stacey Abrams, who is running for governor of Georgia, claimed on Wednesday that a way to fight skyrocketing inflation was to provide more access to abortion.

The gubernatorial candidate, who is running for a second time after losing to Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp (R) in 2018, faced significant backlash on social media after she essentially said that the solution to inflation was to kill more unborn babies.

During her appearance on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe,” Abrams was asked about issues that are currently important to the American people — such as the price of everyday goods that are affected by inflation.

“While abortion is an issue, it nowhere reaches the level of interest of voters in terms of the cost of gas, food, bread, milk, things like that. What can a governor, what could you do as governor to alleviate the concerns of Georgia voters about those livability, daily, hourly issues they’re confronted with?” MSNBC anchor Mike Barnicle asked.

Rather than actually discuss solutions to the problems that Americans are worried about, Abrams actually tried to blame the existence of children for people’s economic woes — saying that abortion is the solution.

“Let’s be clear,” she replied. “Having children is why you’re worried about your price for gas. It’s why you’re concerned about how much food costs. For women this is not a reductive issue. You can’t divorce being forced to carry an unwanted pregnancy from the economic realities of having a child.”

Abrams went on to ramble on about problems affecting the cost of living, simply saying that “a governor can address” these issues without actually providing specifics as to how. Meanwhile, nearly 70% of respondents to a recent Atlanta Journal-Constitution poll stated that the high cost of living was an “extremely important” or “very important” consideration behind how they will vote in the upcoming November elections.

“A governor can address housing prices. A governor can address the cost of education. A governor can put money into the pockets of everyday hardworking Georgians instead of giving tax cuts to the wealthy. That’s what I talk about on the trail,” the Democrat candidate said before quickly switching the topic back to abortion.

Abrams’ abortion comments sparked intense backlash on social media, including from her opponent.

Responding to her non-answer, Kemp provided a list of solutions for inflation, including continuing to suspend the state’s gas tax.

“The Democrat cure for inflation is to kill more children. These people are cartoonishly evil. They aren’t even trying to hide it. Literal comic book villains at this point,” replied Daily Wire host Matt Walsh.

“Yes, you heard that right: Stacey Abrams blames children for the rising costs at the pump and in the grocery store,” the Susan B. Anthony List, a national pro-life organization, wrote.

“Democrats’ current midterm argument is: elect more Democrats so we can have more late-term abortions of healthy children to offset the cost of Democrat-caused inflation,” said Stephen Miller, former senior adviser to former President Donald Trump.

“[Stacey Abrams’] comments are simply outrageous and barbaric. The solution to the Democrats’ inflation crisis is to abort more babies? Absolutely disgusting,” Sen. Rick Scott (R-FL) responded.
