Tim Allen Roasts Disney’s ‘Lightyear’

Legendary actor Tim Allen slammed Disney’s Lightyear after being replaced as the voice actor for the character “Buzz Lightyear” by actor Chris Evans for the prequel film, which ended up failing miserably in its opening weekend.

“It has no relationship to Buzz,” Allen said, referring to the Disney-Pixar film, which was an attempt to give a backstory to the character behind the “Buzz Lightyear” toy in the original Toy Story films.

“I’ve stayed out of this,” Allen, who had previously voiced Buzz in all four of the original Toy Story movies, told Extra. “We talked about this many years ago — but the brass that did the first four movies is not this; it’s a whole new team that really had nothing to do with the first movies.”

The popular actor went on to note that “there’s really no ‘Toy Story’ Buzz without Woody,” referring to how the character of “Woody” from the Toy Story movies is not present in the 2022 Lightyear film.

“So I’m not sure what the idea — I’m a plot guy — it would seem to be a big adventure story, and as I see, it’s not a big adventure story,” Allen said. “It’s a wonderful story; it just doesn’t seem to have any connection to the toy. It has no relationship to Buzz.”

Allen has at least one member of Hollywood on his side, as actress Patricia Heaton called out Disney-Pixar for its casting decision to replace Allen with Evans. In a post on Twitter, the Everybody Loves Raymond actress asked why they would “completely castrate” the Buzz Lightyear character by removing the man who essentially created the role.

“Saw the trailer for Buzz Lightyear, and all I can say is Disney/Pixar made a HUGE mistake in not casting my pal @ofctimallen Tim Allen in the role that he originated, the role that he owns,” Heaton tweeted.

“Tim IS Buzz!” the actress added. “Why would they completely castrate this iconic, beloved character?”

In a follow-up tweet, Heaton added: “Ok, so the current Buzz Lightyear movie is an origin story – but the reason the character became so beloved is because of what [Tim Allen] created.”

“Why remove the one element that makes us want to see it?” she asked, adding the hashtag, “Stupid Hollywood Decisions.”

Some fans of the original Toy Story movies speculated that Allen was replaced with Evans because of his conservative beliefs. Allen’s previous comments about being a conservative in Hollywood appear to back up those concerns.

“You’ve gotta be real careful around here. You get beat up if you don’t believe what everybody believes,” the Last Man Standing star said in 2017 about being a conservative in Hollywood.

Meanwhile, the new Lightyear film was a box office bomb during its first opening weekend in theaters. The movie opened to a disastrous $51 million and earned only $17.7 million in its second weekend, which is a crash of 65%.

The film was also banned in Middle Eastern countries, such as Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE), due to a scene featuring a kiss between two female characters.

The movie’s star, Chris Evans, responded to those who took offense to the lesbian kiss, asserting that “those people are idiots.”

“There’s always going to be people who are afraid and unaware and trying to hold on to what was before,” he added. “But those people die off like dinosaurs.”
