Human traffickers are pressuring migrants to cross the U.S.-Mexico border illegally before President-elect Donald Trump assumes office, warning that stricter immigration policies will make crossings far more difficult. According to the Wall Street Journal, smugglers are using WhatsApp to urge migrants to act quickly, declaring, “It’s now or never.”
These traffickers, many of whom are associated with criminal cartels, have told migrants that Trump’s administration will close the border to illegal crossings immediately. Messages also sarcastically wished migrants “luck” in avoiding apprehension under the incoming policies.

Trump’s plans for immigration reform include reinstating the “Remain in Mexico” policy, restarting construction of the border wall, and deploying National Guard troops to the southern border. He also plans to bring back Title 42, a policy that allows for the rapid removal of migrants without processing asylum claims.
While Mexican officials have reportedly advised against making the journey, many migrants are undeterred. U.S. border officials are preparing for a potential surge in crossings as migrants try to enter the country before Trump’s policies take effect.
