Trump Calls For Elections In Ukraine, Moves Peace Talks Forward

President Donald Trump has suggested that Ukraine should hold elections, arguing that the country’s leadership should be determined by its people rather than remain under martial law indefinitely. His comments came as his delegation continued discussions with Russian officials on potential peace negotiations.

Speaking from Mar-a-Lago, Trump noted that Ukraine had not held elections as scheduled and questioned whether the lack of a vote was in the country’s best interest. “We have a situation where we haven’t had elections in Ukraine, where we have martial law, essentially martial law in Ukraine,” he said.

His remarks followed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s complaints about being excluded from recent peace discussions. Trump responded by suggesting that before Ukraine seeks a role in negotiations, its leadership should be chosen through an election.

Trump also criticized Zelensky’s leadership, claiming his approval rating had dropped to 4%. Polls, however, place Zelensky’s support above 50%. Trump questioned why an election had not yet been held, arguing that it was a reasonable expectation from multiple countries.

Additionally, Trump questioned the handling of US aid sent to Ukraine, raising concerns about transparency. “Where is all the money that’s been given? Where is it going?” he asked, suggesting that there had been little accountability for the billions sent to support Ukraine’s war effort.

Ukraine was originally scheduled to hold a presidential election in April 2024, but it was postponed due to the ongoing war. Zelensky has previously defended the decision, stating that a vote would create political divisions at a time when national unity is crucial.
