President-elect Donald Trump has called for decisive action regarding reports of mystery drones being spotted across the country. He suggested that if the government cannot identify the drones, they should be brought down to ensure public safety.
“Mystery Drone sightings all over the Country. Can this really be happening without our government’s knowledge,” Trump wrote. “I [don’t] think so! Let the public know, and now. Otherwise, [shoot] them down!”
The FBI and Department of Homeland Security issued a joint statement addressing the sightings, stating that no evidence points to a foreign threat or malicious intent. The agencies also noted that many of the reported drones may be manned aircraft operating within legal parameters.
In response to ongoing reports, the Federal Aviation Administration has placed temporary flight restrictions over areas in New Jersey, including Trump’s Bedminster golf club. The restrictions have been extended through December 20 while investigations continue.
White House national security spokesperson John Kirby said the administration is reviewing the reports but warned against rash actions such as shooting down drones without sufficient information. “We know people are afraid. We have those same concerns,” Kirby said.
The sightings have sparked widespread discussion about the government’s ability to handle emerging drone technologies. As the investigations continue, calls for transparency and stronger regulations are growing louder.
