A new poll revealing that nearly half of federal government employees plan to resist President-elect Donald Trump’s policies signals potential challenges for his administration. To ensure his agenda is effectively carried out, Trump could benefit from pursuing meaningful reforms within the federal workforce.
RMG Research found that 42% of federal employees intend to oppose Trump’s incoming administration. Among Democrat-identifying employees, the number rises sharply to 73%, while 89% of Republican federal workers support Trump’s plans. This partisan divide within the government underscores the need for stronger accountability measures.
One strategy Trump may consider is reinstating the Schedule F employment classification. This designation would allow the administration to reassign or dismiss employees who obstruct policy directives. Implementing such reforms could help reduce internal resistance and promote a more efficient government.
The gap between government workers and everyday Americans is also evident. According to the poll, 59% of Main Street Americans back Trump’s agenda, while only 28% support bureaucratic resistance. Meanwhile, the political elite—those with higher incomes and advanced degrees—are more likely to favor opposition within the government.
Federal employees are tasked with executing the policies of elected leaders, not advancing personal political views. By prioritizing reforms that encourage accountability, Trump could align government operations more closely with the public’s interests.
Addressing internal resistance early in his administration may be essential for Trump to achieve his goals. Revisiting policies like Schedule F could offer a practical solution for streamlining government and ensuring policies are properly implemented.
