Watchdog Alleges Federal Employee Violated Hatch Act With Political Posts

Commerce Department employee Ethan Wolf is accused of breaching the Hatch Act by managing a pro-Kamala Harris X account during work hours. A complaint filed by the Foundation for Accountability and Civic Trust (FACT) outlines Wolf’s alleged misuse of taxpayer-funded time to promote Harris’s campaign through partisan social media activity.

The X account, initially named “Biden’s Wins,” shifted its focus to Harris’s presidential bid after President Joe Biden decided not to seek reelection. FACT highlighted posts made during government work hours, including one on September 17 endorsing Harris that reached millions of users.

The account has also been linked to misinformation, including a fabricated claim that NFL quarterback Joe Burrow participated in a Harris fundraising event. Another post falsely depicted a sparsely attended J.D. Vance rally, despite evidence showing hundreds of attendees.

FACT’s executive director, Kendra Arnold, said, “The Hatch Act clearly prohibits federal employees from engaging in political activities during work hours or from government offices.” Arnold called for a full investigation by the Office of Special Counsel, emphasizing the importance of enforcing federal ethics laws.

Wolf claims he no longer operates the account exclusively but has not provided details about other contributors. Financial disclosures show Wolf earned income from Democratic Wins Media LLC, adding another layer of concern about his activities while employed in a government position.

The Biden administration has faced repeated Hatch Act violations, with officials like Karine Jean-Pierre and Andrew Bates previously found guilty of using partisan language in official communications. Critics argue that these violations reflect systemic issues within the administration.

The Office of Special Counsel will determine whether Wolf’s actions violated federal ethics rules. Observers note this case could further spotlight the need for tighter oversight of political activities within federal agencies.
