Whistleblower Report Claims FBI Infiltrated Trump Campaign With Comey’s Approval And No Legal Basis

A whistleblower has alleged that the FBI, under the direction of former Director James Comey, conducted an unauthorized investigation of then-candidate Donald Trump’s 2016 campaign. The whistleblower’s report, submitted to the House Judiciary Committee, claims that Comey ordered two undercover FBI agents, known as “honeypots,” to embed with Trump’s team, searching for potentially damaging information without an official case file.

The whistleblower disclosed that this operation began shortly after Trump’s announcement in 2015 and lacked the documented legal foundation required for FBI investigations. Comey reportedly managed the operation with assistance from Deputy Director Dave Bowdich and Washington Assistant Director Paul Abbate. The agents traveled with Trump’s campaign team, interacting with high-level staff, and one reported target was Trump adviser George Papadopoulos.

Papadopoulos was later charged with making false statements to the FBI, a charge he pleaded guilty to in 2017. He received a pardon from President Donald Trump in 2020. The whistleblower claims the operation was abruptly halted after a newspaper obtained a photo of one of the agents, with the FBI’s press office reportedly warning the publication that the agent’s safety was at risk if the image were published.

Following the operation’s closure, some agents were reassigned, with one reportedly transferred to the CIA to prevent further questioning. Former FBI Assistant Director Chris Swecker called the allegations a “booming, egregious violation,” noting that any investigation of this nature would usually need authorization from the attorney general.

The House Judiciary Committee has stated its intent to investigate the whistleblower’s claims, calling the allegations serious and worthy of further examination.
