The Marijuana-As-Medicine Sales Pitch Takes A Hit

For years, the legalization lobby has pushed marijuana as a harmless way to unwind, and states across the country have raced to legalize it for recreational use. This research is a direct challenge to that narrative. If frequent users are walking around with elevated stress hormones baked into their mornings, the “cannabis calms you down” pitch looks a lot shakier than advocates and dispensary marketing have claimed.

Conservative parents and lawmakers who warned that rapid marijuana legalization was outpacing the actual science now have fresh evidence on their side. This study doesn’t prove marijuana wrecks the body’s stress system single-handedly, but it does show frequent, heavy use tracks with a measurable, biological red flag. That’s the kind of finding public health officials should be shouting from the rooftops, not burying under legalization talking points.

What The Science Still Can’t Prove

To be fair, the researchers themselves are careful to say this study shows a link, not a cause. It doesn’t prove that marijuana use raises cortisol, or that people with naturally higher cortisol are simply more likely to use marijuana in the first place. The broader research on cannabis and stress hormones is genuinely mixed, with some studies finding blunted stress responses instead of elevated ones.

Still, families weighing whether marijuana is truly the harmless stress reliever it’s sold as now have another data point urging caution. As more states loosen restrictions and edibles show up on gas station shelves, this kind of research is exactly what should be driving policy decisions, not campaign donations from the marijuana industry or feel-good branding that skips over what the science actually shows.
