A Democrat running for U.S. Senate in Maine is under fire for a deleted Reddit post that appeared to celebrate a Purple Heart soldier’s near‑death in combat — and his excuses are raising even more questions about respect for our military.
Story Snapshot
- Democratic Senate hopeful Graham Platner admitted owning the Reddit account that mocked a wounded American soldier.[2][3]
- Archived comments show him calling the Purple Heart recipient a “dumb” soldier who “didn’t deserve to live,” shocking veterans.[2]
- Platner now dismisses years of extreme posts as trolling during a “dark time,” saying they do not reflect who he is today.[1][3][4]
- His record of online contempt for police, rural white Americans, and political opponents fuels concerns about his judgment.[3][4]
Archived Reddit Posts Expose Platner’s Contempt for a Wounded Soldier
Fox News Digital reported that a Reddit account using the handle “P-Hustle” commented on a helmet‑camera video of Private First Class Teddy Daniels, an American soldier who was shot four times in a firefight with Taliban fighters in 2012 and later awarded the Purple Heart.[2] The post reportedly called the video “never gets old” and described Daniels as a “dumb” soldier who “didn’t deserve to live,” mocking his breathing and survival and blaming only Taliban “poor marksmanship” for his return home.[2] That account is one Graham Platner has personally acknowledged as his.[2][3]
The same offensive comment was preserved in an online database of Platner’s deleted Reddit history, maintained by The Maine Monitor, which compiled over a decade of his posts so voters could read them directly.[3] Bangor Daily News likewise pointed readers to a full archive of the deleted comments.[1] That independent preservation undercuts any claim that the quote was fabricated or selectively edited. Critics argue that when a candidate derides a wounded American soldier’s survival as a joke, it raises fundamental questions about his fitness to serve in the United States Senate.[2][3]
Candidate Admits Account, Blames ‘Dark Time’ and Online Trolling
Platner has not denied writing the posts. The Maine Monitor reported that he deleted the Reddit account before launching his campaign but later admitted that “P-Hustle” was his and that he made the offensive comments.[3] He has described the period as a “dark time” in his life, saying he suffered from post‑traumatic stress disorder and behaved like “an asshole on the internet,” adding that the posts do not reflect his current thinking.[3] Bangor Daily News quoted him saying “a lot of it isn’t even things I believed then” and that many comments were “stupid joke comments.”[1]
When confronted in television coverage about other inflammatory posts, Platner again confirmed the account and dates, saying he made the comments in 2020 and 2021 but insisting they no longer represent who he is.[4] In one now‑deleted post on whether people grow more conservative with age, he wrote, “I GOT OLDER AND BECAME A COMMUNIST,” reinforcing a pattern of intentionally provocative rhetoric.[4] In another exchange, he appeared to embrace a blanket condemnation of law enforcement, replying “ALL OF THEM, IN FACT” after another user wrote “COPS ARE BASTARDS.”[4] That pattern, critics say, reflects a consistent posture of contempt toward institutions many conservatives value.[2][4]
Disdain for Rural America and the Broader Culture-War Context
Platner’s Reddit history did not only target a wounded soldier and police officers. In one thread, when a commenter suggested white people in rural areas were less racist or ignorant than conservatives claim, the “P-Hustle” account responded that, based on his experience in “white rural America,” they actually were that bad.[4] WMTW reported that Platner later tried to write those comments off as made while he was frustrated and angry, and as an attempt to “get a rise” out of people online, rather than genuine belief.[4] Nonetheless, residents of rural Maine now see in those words a national Democrat echoing the coastal contempt they already feel from the left.

The Maine Monitor noted that across the archive Platner repeatedly wrote about opposing fascism and Nazism, and said there was nothing to suggest allegiance to those ideologies.[3] Supporters may point to that as evidence that he is not a radical extremist. However, for many veterans and blue‑collar voters, the core issue is not ideological labels but character. Federal office requires self‑control, respect for those who wear the uniform, and at least minimal regard for the people you hope to represent. Platner’s own record, preserved in his words, forces Maine voters to decide whether his explanations outweigh the contempt he displayed.[1][2][3][4]
