House Republican Wants To Prohibit Lawmakers From Waving Ukrainian Flags

A Republican congressional lawmaker from Florida recently unveiled plans to introduce legislation prohibiting the waving of foreign flags in Congress after a video on social media went viral showing dozens of lawmakers waving Ukrainian flags shortly after a vote to pass another aid package.

Breitbart News reported that Rep. Kat Cammack (R-FL) announced the bill after a foreign flag was unexpectedly displayed on the floor of the House.

On X, formerly known as Twitter, Cammack said, “Watching American representatives pass out & wave Ukrainian flags in the United States House of Representatives chamber infuriated me. As we speak, my team is drafting legislation that will prohibit the display of foreign nations’ flags on the House floor.”

Reps. Anna Paulina Luna (R-FL), Matt Gaetz (R-FL) and Eric Burlison (R-MO) slammed Democrats for waving Ukrainian flags on the House floor.

“Put those damn flags away. It is a disgrace to display any other flag than the American flag in the House Chamber!” Luna wrote on X.

“Democrats waiving Ukrainian flags on the House floor tells you everything you need to know about their priorities,” Burlison said.

The incident occurred shortly after the House supported another aid package to Ukraine worth $61 billion. Although most members waved small, handheld flags, others waved full-sized Ukrainian flags while voting on the legislation.

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA), who supported the aid package, denounced the waving of the flags as being “in violation of decorum,” according to American Greatness.

“These are not normal times here in the House or around the world, as we all know,” Johnson told reporters following the vote. “And, we saw a disturbance here on the House floor just a bit ago. I just want to say simply what I think most people around the country understand and agree, we should only wave one flag on the House floor. And I think we know which flag that is.”

The foreign aid package for Ukraine was one of multiple bills passed by the House on April 19, 2024. The chamber passed legislation to ban TikTok over the social media company’s ties with the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).
