Biden Mobilizes Reserves For Uncertain European Mission

As tensions continue to escalate in Europe, Joe Biden has authorized the mobilization of up to 3,000 military reserves, stirring concern among conservatives who fear that this move could unwittingly accelerate our nation closer to a global conflict. While the White House insists that this is a necessary step to strengthen “Operation Atlantic Resolve,” critics such as Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) have accused the administration of “sleepwalking our great country into a world war.”

Launched in 2014 after Russia’s annexation of the Crimean Peninsula, Operation Atlantic Resolve was designed to enhance the deterrence posture along the eastern flank of NATO. But Biden’s recent order indicates an unexpected and significant escalation amid the ongoing Ukraine crisis. This development leads directly to the question of whether we are observing a measured response or a hasty reaction driven by disconnected leadership.

Biden’s executive order, made under the legal authority of sections 121 and 12304 of title 10, United States Code, permits the Secretary of Defense and the Secretary of Homeland Security to call the selected reserve and certain members of the Individual Ready Reserve to active duty. However, as Gaetz pointed out, the call to war constitutionally requires the consent of Congress, raising concerns about the administration’s willingness to bypass the legislature.

With Biden attending a NATO summit in Lithuania just before the announcement of his order, there is a palpable unease about this move. As Gaetz puts it, the Biden administration appears “to be at war with Russia.” While some may dismiss this as alarmist rhetoric, deploying our troops to a region fraught with tension is not a decision to be taken lightly. The potential implications extend beyond the immediate crisis to the very nature of executive authority.

Notably, the question arises as to whether a precedent is being established. Can a president bypass Congressional approval to mobilize our military? Is it an attempt to conceal or secure something, or simply the act of an administration many conservatives view as self-obsessed and out of touch with the geopolitical realities?

This development should disturb those who value checks and balances in our democracy. The thought of Biden and his advisors making decisions with far-reaching implications without robust oversight should give pause to every American, regardless of political persuasion.

It is essential to remember that our servicemen and women are not pawns to be moved on a global chessboard. They are fathers and mothers, sons and daughters, and their lives should be protected with due diligence, clear objectives, and comprehensive strategy.

While Biden may see this decision as a bold response to Russia’s aggressive posturing, conservatives question whether this move may be less strategy and more bravado. For the sake of our nation and the world, it is essential that we ensure our military actions are dictated by strategic, measured decision-making, not impulsivity and political maneuvering.
